Study: Genome sequences of electrochemically active bacteria isolated from an anaerobic digester
show Abstracthide Abstract
In this project, to deepen our understanding of electrochemically active bacteria (EAB) inhabiting anaerobic digesters, we attempted to isolate EAB from residue effluents discharged from an anaerobic digester treating food waste. As a result, three EAB were isolated after enrichment in microbial fuel cells. These isolates are phylogenetically diverse and exhibit different electrochemical characteristics. These results suggest that anaerobic digesters harbor unexpectedly diverse EAB, and it would be of interest to gain information as to how they thrive in anaerobic digesters. Furthermore, the present work expands our knowledge of the diversity of EAB, implying that more diverse EAB are present in nature than those we have known.
